Powerflush: what it is, what it costs, and when a system actually needs one
A powerflush is one of the most quoted — and most mistrusted — jobs in heating. Done for the right reasons it transforms a sludged-up system; sold to every customer with a lukewarm radiator, it earns the trade a bad name. Here’s what it actually is, when it’s genuinely needed, and what it should cost.
What a powerflush actually does
Over years, central heating water corrodes the inside of radiators and pipework, producing black magnetite sludge. Sludge settles in radiators (cold at the bottom, hot at the top), clogs pipework, and — most expensively — collects in the boiler’s heat exchanger and pump.
A powerflush connects a high-flow pumping unit to the system, circulating water and cleaning chemicals at velocity through each radiator and the pipework in turn, dislodging and flushing out the sludge, before the system is refilled with fresh water and inhibitor.
The signs a system genuinely needs one
- Radiators cold at the bottom but hot at the top, especially several of them
- Radiator water that bleeds out black or dark brown
- Kettling — banging or rumbling from the boiler
- Slow warm-up, cold spots and a pump that runs hot or noisy
- Repeated failures of pumps or heat exchangers — sludge is often the underlying cause
What it costs and how long it takes
Typical UK prices run from around £300 for a small system to £600+ for larger houses, driven mostly by the number of radiators. A proper flush takes the best part of a day — 4 to 8 hours. A “powerflush” quoted at an hour and £100 is a chemical rinse wearing a grand name.
On a new boiler installation, thorough cleansing of the existing system is required (BS 7593 and effectively every manufacturer’s warranty terms) — though whether that means a full powerflush or a chemical cleanse depends on the system’s condition. A magnetic filter fitted on the return protects the new boiler afterwards.
When it’s not the answer
A single cold radiator is more often balancing, a stuck valve or an airlock. Very old or fragile systems can spring leaks under high-velocity flushing — sometimes a gentler chemical cleanse over days is the wiser call, and occasionally sludged radiators are simply cheaper to replace. An honest engineer will say so.
